Distant Stitch Diploma, Module 6, Chapter 2 - Collect and Transform Surfaces

I have collected a variety of contemporary textiles together, all from my stash, a mixture of natural and synthetic materials.

1

Fruit netting, coral skeleton, raffia and feathers.

2

Arranged in a design, inspired by Chapter 1. This is not stitched.

3
Layers of lutradur, melted with heat gun, side1. Although the fabric is synthetic, once melted it looks  very natural.

4

I prefer this side, the underside.

5

Tyvek treated with heat gun.  The surface hardens once heated.

6

Ridges marked with paintstiks.

7

Heated again so that the paint melts and forms globules

8

Tyvek painted with metallic silver paint and heated.  It has a very pleasing surface, shiny and rucked.

9

Tyvek painted in metallic copper, black and silver and heated, purple paintstik applied to ridges. It has the look of rocks, washed by the sea.

10

Painted tyvek and tissue paper, heated and skimmed with paintstiks. The surface here is slightly less shiny.

11

Newspaper covered with muslin. Acrylic wax applied to honesty seeds to prevent seed cases splitting. Black outline stitched around seed cases to secure.

12
Crumpled glossy magazine paper, painted with acrylic wax to give it a 'leather' look.

13

Shredded paper, backed with soluble fabric and stitched, then ruffled up. Inspired by photo of 2 women in Chapter 1.

14

Magazine and shredded paper, bonded together.
