Distant Stitch Diploma, Module 5, Chapter 7 - Trapped and Pocket Features

I chose my coral reef theme for inspiration in this chapter.

64

65

Embroidered clingfilm first appeared when I was studying for the C&G Certificate. I have folded the clingfilm and stitched the ends to create a clam shape. The contents are pieces of glass, smoothed by the sea and washed up on the beach. I haven't varnished the glass as I think the dullness is more in keeping with the cloudiness of the clingfilm.

66

Side view.

67

A mermaid's purse, made from acetate and painted with alcohol ink. It contains a piece of coral I found on the beach. The edges are sealed with a soldering iron.

68

Reverse view of mermaid's purse.

69

A shell wrapped in a cone-shaped, acetate envelope, sealed with a soldering iron.

70

Jumbo bubble wrap, split in half to reveal the air pockets.  I have placed found objects in the pockets and have placed a sheet of acetate over the top. I cut out 2 circles as some shells protruded above the bubble wrap surface.  The acetate is secured in place by 5 beads, stitched through all layers.

71

View across the surface.

Distant Stitch Diploma Module 5, Chapter 6 - Suspension in Silk Fibre Layers

Back on safer ground and I've really enjoyed this chapter!

52

Silk paper made from silk tops, thread and beads.

53

Reverse of 52.

54

Silk paper backed onto scrim with glue trials. Brusho ink was sprinked on top and sprayed with water - interesting but probably not worth repeating!

55

Silk paper made from silk tops and silk rods. I like the texture that has been created with the silk rods lying flatter than the surrounding silk tops.

56

Silk paper made from a piece of dyed silk top - beautiful mix of colours, very 'coral reef'! It would take stitching well.

57

Silk paper from cocoon strippings. Very fiddly to spread out but has great potential.

58

Cocoon stripping, Brusho inks and small pieces of painted pelmet vilene.

59

Covered with silk throwsters waste  and trails of glue.

60

Dry (front).

61

Reverse. I think this would work well appliquéd onto another fabric.

62

Silk paper from silk throwsters waste.

63

Layered with blue silk tops and stitched clingfilm pieces, sprayed with very dilute PVA glue. Again this is in my coral reef theme and could be developed with hand stitching.

Distant Stitch Diploma Module 5, Chapter 5 - Making Holes with a Fibre Etch Process

I have come to the conclusion that Devoré is not my thing! I love Devoré scarves and have several but I found controlling the paste very difficult!

42

Stencil cut from paper .....

43

.... and screen printed onto red velvet.

44
Not too bad a result.

45

Blanket stitch in thick wool on satin mix fabric. Paste applied with a brush.

46

The protected pattern shows but the paste has discoloured the fabric.

47

I  decided to use a commercial template to see if this would get a better result.

48

White velvet - the paste has worked in places but it was very difficult to control.

49

Using a commercial stencil, this attempt on velvet was better.

50

Again using a commercial stencil, on pure cotton, the whole fabric was eaten away so I outlined the shape with a pen.

51

This is a polyester/cotton mix, with the paste applied with a brush. The lighter marks are only visible if the fabric has a strong light behind it.

Not my favourite chapter!
