This first slip is a tomato puree tube stitched to one of the fabrics I made in chapter 5. I zigzagged round the shape and then curled the edges.
 |

I coloured Yupo paper on both sides with alcohol ink, light and dark, for 75 and 76.

The shape is cut in nylon organza, using a soldering iron.

I cut 2 organza shapes. Four shapes were cut out of Yupo paper, which I ironed to make them crinkle. By making slits at the top or bottom of the pieces, I linked them together, showing both dark and light sides, interspersed with organza.

Wire frame for supporting stitching.
 |
80 |
Snippets of plastic net sandwiched between clear organza, on wire. The organza disguised much of the plastic, which was disappointing. I trimmed the stalk and curled in edges in 84.
 |
81 |
Snippets of plastic net sandwiched between soluble fabric, on wire. I ironed the net and it melted and lost some of its definition but created holes instead!
 |
82 |
Silk coloured with alcohol inks backed by painted tyvek, zigzagged together. The tyvek was ironed to distort it. The alcohol inks produced a very muted colour mix. I had to work very quickly to spread them across the fabric. The colours spread more easily on paper.
 |
83 |
Silk painted with acrylic paints and free machine stitched to tyvek. The tyvek side was then ironed. The stitching created a more pleasing distortion and the acrylic paint was more striking than 82.
 |
84 |
Six slip samples, distorted using wire and heat.

Top right shows the fabrics layered on each other. In the centre are the individual fabrics. I chose orange fabric to lay behind the negative shaped to highlight the orange organza in the layers. This piece is backed onto black felt.

This piece measures 30 x 30 cms. It looks good mounted on a black background.
