My design theme for the diploma will be coral reefs. Underwater films and photos have always fascinated me and a few years ago I was lucky enough to go snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef. I have also been a beachcomber for more years than I care to remember! I've collected shells and a few corals on my travels so starting to create a 'heap' was quite easy. I've added to my heap by searching the internet and looking through books and have put some of my finds on a large pinboard, to give inspiration.
Corals reefs are very diverse in character. They come in a multitude of different forms so I will have many opportunities to look for colour, line, shape, form and texture. In addition, coral reefs provide shelter for fish, molluscs and sponges, so this will broaden my research. I find the prospect for working on the diploma very exciting, especially being able to choose a design theme.
My spider map has helped me to focus on my topic and I will provide me with many ideas as I progress through the modules.
My sketchbook for drawing and painting is A5. I have not done a great deal of drawing and painting before so I hope to develop these skills as I progress through the course.
I have decided to present my formal work on A2 cards, joined together in the form of a Jacob's Ladder. I have made a small scale mock up and I think it will work.

This is photo of my shell and coral collection that I have compiled over many years. The pink 'coral' in the middle of the picture is a piece of silk that I pleated, steamed, painted and edged a few years ago and has been residing in my sewing room ever since!
