A very enjoyable chapter to work through.

Traditional machine stitching on three layers - calico, wadding and synthetic satin. I spotted the 'OK' logo on an Orla Kiely bag at her exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London last month.

Three layers of fabric consisting of calico, knitted square and net/crochet cord topped with FuseFX. The cross in pearl stitch (6 strands embroidery thread) divides the sample into 4 sections.
Top left: narrow diagonal rows of back stitch, 2 strands embroidery thread.
Top right: experimental stitches using herringbone and cross-stitch in varying thicknesses.
Bottom left: off centre circles stitched in backstitch, inner circle - 6 strands embroidery thread, next - 4 strands, next - 2 strands, outer circle - 1 strand.
Bottom right: large running stitch - 2 strands embroidery thread.

For page 36 and 37, I stitched the same design on stretch jersey, backed with calico. I stuffed the positive shapes on page 36 above, and the negative shaped on page 37 below. I was surprised how different the two samples appear.

The sheep logo was inspired by a weekend in the Cotswolds. The bottom layer is fusible interfacing. The middle layer is correlated cardboard and the top layer is cotton scrim. I used both sides of the cardboard to add more texture, stitching in backstitch round the smooth card and used long running stitch down the grooves in the corrugated side. The eyes are large French knots stitched using string.

Calico backing layered with various thickness of card, handmade paper, wadding, organza, covered with netting. Hand stitching to hold the layers and thicknesses together. Centre stitched in 3 strands of embroidery thread, middle layer stitched with 6 strands, outer edge stitched with 12 strands.

One layer of fabric, machine stitched using cording foot and twin needles. Wool yarn used at back. Fabric contorted due to width of rows.

My favourite! I always wondered how celtic knots were stitched and now I know! Calico backing and synthetic satin on top. The gold cord is stitched in back stitch and the brown thread is a single strand of embroidery thread. I used string to pad out the channels. The differing thickness of the threads adds a slight shadow to the sample.
