EVALUATION - Module 6 and Beyond

Looking at South Pacific cultures at the start of Module 6 demonstrated how resourceful people can be, using any found materials, as well as recycling and reusing items. I particularly enjoyed looking at the Tapa barkcloth and the use of feathers. Although working with the Tapa designs in paper and card was not very successful for me, I was pleased with a sample I made, stitching feathers between layers of felt and net. I was blown away by egg tempura and quill work also interested me.  I used a variation of it in my final piece.

I have not got into to the habit of using a sketchbook every day but I do use it when I’m experimenting with a new design, re-working it until I am pleased with the result. I  record my working methods and thoughts as well, so that I can always refer back to ideas later. My sketchbooks are not neat and beautiful but a very useful  source of information.

The main design work in this module has been my final assessment piece, which has taken many twists and turns. From an initial idea to the finished result, I have carried out many experiments using drawings, fabrics and paint and learned a tremendous amount along the way. I’ll take all of this forward to my future projects.

I chose 3 artists who have influenced and inspired me the most - Maggie Grey for her use of metallics and digital design, Ruth Issett for her beautiful use of colour and Margaret Beal, who taught me the delights of using a soldering iron. I find their work a joy to look at and I know I will continue to refer to their work for many years to come.

Finally, it goes without saying that Sian Martin has been a tremendous inspiration, helping and guiding me through the C&G certificate and diploma syllabuses over the past 8 years. I have learned so much and am eager to get started on new projects so that I can use all the skills I have acquired.
